Tbilisi State Medical University

It is a leading medical university in Tbilisi, Georgia. More than 85 years have passed since the Tbilisi State Medical Institute was founded on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine of Tbilisi University in 1992 the name of the Tbilisi State Medical Institute was changed to the Medical University.

On June 10, 1930, Tbilisi University was reorganized and founded by the Tbilisi Medical Institute of Medicine, which became the most powerful new impetus for higher medical education and development of medical sciences in Georgia. During the founding period, the institute had three faculties: Medical Preventive Therapy (Dentistry Department), Hygienic Prophylaxis and Pharmacological Chemotherapy. The Faculty of Medicine was established at the time of almost 100 years in the history of the Medical Institute and was established at different times: pediatrics (1931), dentistry (since 1936), military medicine (since 1993), biological medicine (since 1994), psychiatry and psychotherapy (since 1996). Currently, there are five faculties in the Medical University: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Analysis of revolutionary, world and political changes in the goal, in some cases, in the country and society at the beginning of the nineties of the last century, made it clear that the enterprise needed to create more space for future tasks; The newly acquired autonomy must be incorporated into the new university structure, which means that the medical institution must be converted into a university, where there is already an expected presence of the perspective. The initiative of this goal, the initiative of the dialectic was the medical university itself. November 24, 1992 is a historic day of higher medical education in Georgia, which began its new phase – the Tbilisi State Medical Institute was transformed into the Tbilisi State Medical University.

The medical university immediately came to the fore in overcoming the 21st century challenge of medical education reform. In 1997, at Tbilisi State Medical University, a strategy for realizing the results-oriented learning methodology was developed. It was based on the recommendations of European experts. The medical university was already a member of the European Association for Medical Education (AMEE), and is a member of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). They not only carry out standard procedures of guidance or recommendation but also participate in the development and organization of recommendations. According to the latter, a competitive international medical education includes three core principles: clinical reasoning, information management and communication skills.

The need to implement the new law that has already been enacted in the higher education system of Georgia by 2006, the passion for the advantages of global education and European experience in medical education, the need to fulfill international obligations to reform medical education and medicine. University and academic medical association found the need for change. The healthcare system is not managed by old mechanisms. As a result, traditional forms of training qualified specialists needed innovative changes. The higher education system consisting of three stages (Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degrees) began to coordinate with the post-diploma education process. This will help to harmoniously introduce the principles of “holistic living”. However, it is clear that creating such an emergency in medical education was a necessary material and human resource.

All of the above caused a very important step for the medical education system in 2006, Tbilisi State Medical University was merged into Tbilisi State Medical Academy, this combination of traditional medical faculties within the university combined with undergraduate and postgraduate medical students in Ghana, contributed to the traditional Medical and natural sciences in many ways. In 2007, the State Medical University joined the Faculty of Natural Physical Culture and Rehabilitation of the State Academy of Physical Culture and Sports.

These very important associations were attached to Tbilisi State Medical University in 2006 and 2009 to conduct academic positions. 371 full professors, adjunct professors and adjunct professors at the university; About 350 invited teachers participate in the academic process.
